Jazz festivals, community experiences and a new airport — Saint Lucia is buzzing

Speaking at Caribbean Week New York, Louis Lewis, Chief Executive Officer of the Saint Lucia Tourism Authority, reports a 7% overall increase in arrivals to April, with cruise up 9%, yacht arrivals up 15% and stay-over at 3%. Crucially, however, visitor expenditure is growing at a faster rate than arrivals — a direct result of the Authority's community tourism strategy, which actively channels spending beyond the hotel plant and into local communities.

Lewis also addresses the geopolitical concentration risk in Saint Lucia's source markets, outlining how the Authority has revamped its European marketing operation — appointing new representatives in France and Germany — and made a deliberate entry into Latin America.

He highlights the Saint Lucia Jazz and Arts Festival as a powerful marketing vehicle and looks ahead to significant infrastructure investment: a redeveloped seaport, and a major enhancement of the island's primary international airport.

At the centre of the Authority's long-term vision is a dedicated community tourism agency — designed to ensure that local communities become active participants in, not mere spectators of, the value created by tourism.
